Best Version to Get

We typically purchase the Crosstrek Premium for our test program, as going with that second-tier trim gives buyers access to the optional power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and blind spot warning and rear cross traffic warning. The Premium also includes the larger infotainment touchscreen. None of those options are offered on the Base model.

We went with the third-tier Sport for this most recent test to get a closer “apples-to-apples” comparison with the Hybrid, which starts at the Sport trim level. The Sport adds larger 18-inch wheels (a possible benefit to handling, but a slight detriment to ride quality), a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and yellow exterior accents. If you like leather seats, you’ll need to step up to the top-tier Limited and Wilderness, which also include blind spot warning and rear cross traffic warning.

Consumer Reports puts people first. For more than 80 years, CR has provided consumers with independent research, ratings and recommendations to help make good purchase decisions. As a nonprofit consumer testing and advocacy organization, CR works with businesses and government to improve the safety, performance, value and reliability of products and services.

Every year CR puts manufacturer claims to the test for thousands of products, from cars and appliances to baby products and sunscreens. CR purchases all the products that we test and uses scientific research methods to develop our ratings.
